The blockchain is all about transparency. It’s ironic, then, that the identity of the person who developed Bitcoin, wrote Bitcoin’s white paper, and deployed its first reference implementation and first ever blockchain database, is still a mystery even today. This person is only known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Satoshi Nakamoto net worth is a subject of much debate and speculation, but overall their net worth is agreed to be around potentially $42 billion in 2022.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s net worth is derived solely from their vast ownership of Bitcoin — an estimate that ranges from 980,000 to over a million tokens. We take a deep dive into the enigma that is Satoshi Nakamoto, who they could be, and how they managed to grow their net worth into the billions just through Bitcoin.

Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?

Ask anyone interested in crypto about Satoshi Nakamoto and they’ll know who you’re talking about. They’re probably the most famous name in crypto — and yet, their identity and details of their life are a complete mystery.

Here’s what we do know: Satoshi Nakamoto is the pseudonym of the person (or people) who invented blockchain technology, a record of transactions made in Bitcoin — or other cryptocurrency — that are maintained in a peer-to-peer network.

The blockchain is the foundation of crypto — without it, crypto as we know it today wouldn’t exist.

Satoshi Nakamoto created the blockchain to host their cryptocurrency, which would become Bitcoin. They also wrote Bitcoin’s white paper — the blueprint for Bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto was an active developer for Bitcoin until 2010.

The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is one of the biggest mysteries in crypto… And everyone loves a mystery. Crypto sleuths have been trying to figure out the identity of Bitcoin’s founder since 2007. Despite this, we’re still no closer to knowing the identity of the person (or people!) behind one of the most genius inventions the internet has experienced.

Satoshi Nakamoto Net Worth: What We Know

Here’s what we do know: Satoshi Nakamoto is obviously a Japanese name, and in 2012 they stated that they were a man living in Japan. This claim has been met with some skepticism for a number of reasons. Satoshi Nakamoto’s posts on forums use British English, and include the spellings “grey”, “maths” instead of the American “math”, and other words like “flat” and “colour”. British English would be an unusual choice for a Japanese person as American English is the standard in Japan.

Another clue is Satoshi Nakamoto’s hours that they’re active online. A Swiss software engineer, Stefan Thomas, recorded and graphed the timestamps for Satoshi Nakamoto’s forum posts — more than 500 of them. The results — there were close to zero posts between 2pm and 8pm in Japan. So, either Satoshi Nakamoto has a very strange sleep cycle… Or they don’t live in Japan.

Instead, because of their use of British English and forum posting time, Satoshi Nakamoto likely lives in Europe, or is a European or British person who lives in the USA. Whoever they are, it’s unlikely that they live in Japan.

Some people believe that Satoshi Nakamoto isn’t a person at all… No, they don’t think he’s an AI or a robot. Rather than being one person, some believe they’re a group of people working anonymously under one name.

The evidence in support of this theory is pretty strong. Those who have read the original code for Bitcoin have commented that it’s too well developed to have been created by an individual, or that it was either created by a team or a genius.

One of the most obvious candidates is Dorian Nakamoto, a Californian man of Japanese descent whose original name was Satoshi Nakamoto. Dorian Nakamoto came to public attention when a reported released this article speculating his role as the Bitcoin founder. Nakamoto has training as a physicist, and has worked as a systems engineer. Nakamoto denies being Satoshi Nakamoto, and stated in 2014 that he had never heard of Bitcoin.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s Work on Bitcoin

Satoshi Nakamoto began working on Bitcoin as early as 2007, and the domain name bitcoin.org was registered on August 18, 2008. Nakamoto published a white paper  on the cryptography mailing list describing digital currency. Its name: Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.

2009 was the year the world saw the very first blockchain and Bitcoin transaction. Released by Nakamoto it was named version 0.1 on SourceForge. The genesis block was named block number 0, and had a reward of 50 Bitcoin tokens.

Embedded in the coinbase translation of this genesis block is the text: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks”. This refers to the UK based The Times newspaper, and reflects the headline from that date. The text is a timestamp, but also comments on the instability of traditional banking systems.

After the launch of Bitcoin in 2009, Nakamoto continued to collaborate with other developers on both Bitcoin and the blockchain. However, he handed over his work to other developers in 2010, most prominently the control of the source code to Gavin Andresen.

By mid-2010, Satoshi Nakamoto was completely removed from the project, and they haven’t been involved in crypto projects since their announcement of stepping away from Bitcoin.

Despite cutting ties with Bitcoin and blockchain development, Satoshi Nakamoto is one of the highest owners of Bitcoin to date, and owns between 750,000 and 1,100,000 Bitcoin. From their Bitcoin alone, Satoshi Nakamoto’s net worth is at least $42 billion, even after accounting for the current crash. This makes Satoshi Nakamoto one of the richest people on the planet.
