Xavier Mortimer: The Magician Who’s Breaking the Internet

Sharing the wonder of magic

Everybody loves magic. There’s nothing more fascinating than watching someone pull objects out of thin air, and defy all of what we know to be true and possible in this world. Especially with all the heaviness of the real world since the pandemic, it’s an understatement that everyone is craving a bit of magic and excitement in their lives.

Back in 2020, when the world was at its lowest and reality was at its darkest, one Xavier Mortimer suddenly appeared on social media – taking the internet by storm with his incredible illusions, and amazing magical abilities. Even still, as the world begins to open up, people just can’t get enough of him.

From being cut in half, to removing his head from his shoulders all the way to making wine and cheese appear out of thin air – Xavier has taken the art of magical illusions to the next level. He’s a 41 year old comedian, illusionist, dancer, and composer who is proof that by simply following your dreams – no matter how impossible they may appear – you can achieve the extraordinary.

The First Trick

Xavier grew up in a very small town in the southwest of France. As a kid, he always assumed he would lead somewhat of a normal life, and pursue a mainstream career in something like landscaping. Never did he think he would actually become a globally recognized entertainer – let alone a magician.

But then, Xavier got his first glimpse into the world of magic while at a dinner event when he was just a kid. They had a talented magician performing, and the minute he saw the illusionist transfer ashes from one hand into the other, Xavier was instantly lured in by the mystical forces of the craft. He needed to know how it worked.

And he wasn’t going to stop until he did.

Much like kids follow him today in absolute awe, Xavier followed this magician and looked up to his talents. He became obsessed with learning the art of magic – reading up on everything he could on the topic. Luckily, his dad happened to be an antique bookshop owner, and gave him his first ever book on magic – an old, dusty novel on witchcraft. Over the years, the number of magic books on Xavier’s shelf only started to grow.

He was learning more and more about magic tricks, and even started putting on shows for his friends and family. The more he performed for his peers and on the streets, the more people started to notice him.

Then, Xavier got so good that he started getting calls asking him to perform at events – and they were actual paid gigs! From there, he started getting so many bookings that he was actually able to make a living. Xavier went on to study at many different arts and performance schools around Europe after he discovered this passion for magic. He studied at the Music and Dance Conservatory of La Rochelle, the Desmond Jones Acting School in London, and another school in Paris, Lecoq Acting School.

Little did he know, his commitment to entertaining and bringing smiles to people’s faces would eventually lead him to packing his bags, saying goodbye to his small town home in France, and moving on to share his magic with the world.

Xavier Mortimer On Stage

Making a Career in Magic

Xavier was just 20 years old when he started performing on stage – and he was like most newbies stepping out in front of a crowd for the first time: shy and shaking. But, he did it anyway. And he hasn’t stopped since.

Xavier was first publicly acknowledged in 2006 with his hit show “L’Ombre Orchestre” – The Shadow Orchestra. It was a completely silent show that went on to be performed in Paris and another 1000 times in different countries around the world.

He eventually became so recognized that he was prompted to open his own shows in Paris, then Madrid – and before he knew it, he was being called up by Cirque du Soleil to perform with them in Vegas. It was an opportunity that took a lot of consideration, but was ultimately one he couldn’t pass up. So, Xavier packed his bags and took the leap across the ocean to pursue magic alongside some of the top performers in the world in Las Vegas.

After having performed over 1000 times with Cirque du Soleil, he has now moved on to open his very own show in Las Vegas – making him the first ever Cirque du Soleil performer to do so. At first he didn’t think he could do it. But then, he decided to go for it anyways – realizing that anything is possible if you just put in the work. So, he did. He took his character “Sneaky” from the “Michael Jackson’s One” show, and created his own hit show in 2012.

After many appearances on TV in the following years, Xavier went on to open another show in Vegas back in 2016. This show, “Xavier Mortimer’s Magical Dream,” is now performing at Bally’s and it has skyrocketed to the top of the charts as one of the best magic shows in Vegas. Xavier has gone on to perform on hit shows like America’s Got Talent, The Next Great Magician, and even appeared on Fool Us, a show run by magicians, Penn and Teller – and he actually fooled them.

Xavier has found immense success because he shares his magical talents and performs them as if they are stories. He sees magic as an art, an experience, a dream that you bring your audience through – from beginning to end. He creates magical worlds with his mime-like performances, and even composes the music for his own shows.

This narrative way of performing magic is something Xavier grew up with in Europe, and he’s now brought it to Vegas, and shown them a completely new side to the craft. His shows are family friendly, entertaining, and since they are often done with no words, they are stories that can be accessed and understood by many people from different countries, across the globe.

Becoming an Internet Illusionist

Being a performer during the COVID-19 pandemic, Xavier lost his opportunity to share his stories with the world. But, as always, he worked his magic – and found another way. He made the decision to start performing for the camera, and share his videos on social media. And not only did he get to continue sharing his work this way, but he built a new kind of brand, and grew a whole new following.

Before the 2020 lockdown, Xavier had already begun posting some of his videos to TikTok – but once he was stuck at home, he started investing more time into it. He got a team together and started creating longer videos and sharing them across his channels. It didn’t take long before his on-camera illusions started to catch on. After all, not many illusionists were taking the time, money, and effort that he was to make magic videos.

Xavier dove into a niche with enough demand, and not enough supply – the perfect formula for a beginner creator. And although it took some time for him to find his voice, he finally hit his first viral video, defying gravity. And from then on, his videos started blowing up. And by blowing up, we mean each one was raking in an average of 100 million views.

Since 2020, Xavier has built his following on TikTok to over 3.2 million people. He has 1.07 million subscribers on YouTube, and 6.3 million followers on Facebook. In total, his videos have accumulated 5 billion views across all of his platforms – and now, he’s one of the most followed social media magicians online.

Xavier Mortimer black and white

Xavier has won countless international awards for his work. He won Best Magic Show of Las Vegas three times in a row from 2018-2020, was named Best Family Friendly Show of Las Vegas 2 years in a row, and also won the title of Best Headliner and Best Value Show in 2020.

Xavier built his career by doing what others weren’t – by telling a story with his magic, and then sharing it beyond the stage. His persistence, his desire to entertain, and his love for bringing smiles to people’s faces is what finally allowed magic to become his life’s work.

And most importantly: he’s proven that your wildest dreams may not be as elusive as they seem. Just like magic, there’s always a way to pull it off – no matter how impossible it might look from where you stand.
