If you don’t have young children, there’s a chance you may have never heard of Blippi – but this video superstar is a hero to millions of kids all over the world. With his fun videos and catchy songs, he’s racked up more than 3 billion views on YouTube, and has grown an estimated net worth of $20 million.
Blippi (Stevin John) is a former US Air Force Serviceman, turned video content creator. He creates content for children’s entertainment and education on YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon Video. His YouTube channel mainly consists of videos for kids to help them learn colors, shapes, numbers, letters, alphabets, nursery rhymes, and much more.
Blippi got his start in the entertainment business as a comedian, but his career wasn’t always in the spotlight. In fact, Stevin went on to work in the Air Force for two years before he made the move to Los Angeles, California, to start his career in marketing and video production.
While the impact of Blippi’s content was greatly inspired by all of the farm animals and tractors he grew up with as a country kid, the original idea for Blippi came from Stevin’s interactions with his family. He would watch his two-year-old nephew try to interact with low-quality YouTube videos and saw an opportunity. This was a turning point that made Stevin realize that he wanted to create a children’s show that was positive, educational, and entertaining – using of high-quality equipment and graphics.
After several weeks of drawing designs for wardrobe, figuring out character names, and brainstorming video topics, Stevin decided to go for it and host the show all by himself. When he was coming up with a name for his character, he listed out several hundred made-up names that would be easy for kids to pronounce. He chose ones with repeating letters, and ones that sounded cheerful and upbeat and, alas, Blippi was born!
Blippi’s iconic look was not left up to fate either – it was carefully crafted by Stevin. Even his signature colors were all chosen for a specific reason, from trying to make kids feel at ease to setting himself for future green-screen success.
The first episode of Blippi aired in 2014 and became an instant hit with children everywhere. With catchy songs and manic energy, Blippi has made a lasting impression on so many kids around the world – and he isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
In a very short time, Blippi shot to YouTube fame by taking toddlers on journeys through soft-surface play spaces and parks. In other words, Blippi is Mr. Rogers, Elmo, and Dr. Seuss all rolled into one colorful, high-energy package. And the kids love it!
One thing that has helped Blippi resonate so well with his audience, is that his videos are simple and entertaining. He’s created a striking look for Blippi (with his orange suspenders, glasses and bow ties) that stands out and catches children’s attention. And then, he takes them on journeys through museums, farms, and local fire stations. He makes ordinary things fun. Because of his ability to understand his audience, speak their language, and his entertaining and simplified approach to storytelling, kids love him.
Stevin was originally making Blippi videos all by himself. But now, he employs a whole team to keep up with the demand for his catchy videos.
Blippi started out as a simple online, live action, educational children’s show for kids aged 2-5 years old. However, just within a few years, Blippi has grown into a full on hit. Blippi has become one of the world’s most popular preschool entertainers with 10 billion views on YouTube, and over 13 million subscribers. The show has also expanded into 8 different languages and is now available on a series of different streaming platforms.
When Stevin first started, he had no idea that his character would be this big of a success. But the reason it did so well and increased his net worth drastically, was because he carved a niche for himself. He saw a gap in the market that needed to be filled when it came to good, educational content for children online. So, he made it a point to start creating value-based videos for his target audience. He focused on creating quality education and fun for kids all over the globe.
What sets Blippi aside from other kids’ entertainers, is that he has focused his attention solely on his target audience: children. He doesn’t create content to simultaneously appeal to parents, instead, he works to create the most value possible, for those he wants to serve most.
Because of his unique approach and focus, Blippi’s channel was able to amass 5.5 billion views overall from different countries back in 2019. And since then, that number has only kept growing.
With an estimated revenue of $17 million dollars from his 13.3 million YouTube subscribers, Blippi is one of the highest-paid YouTube stars in the world. In 2020, Forbes reported that Blippi was the eighth highest-earning YouTuber, edging out both David Dobrik and Jeffree Star. It is thanks to all these diverse sources of revenue that Blippi was able to establish such a high estimated net worth.
Blippi’s channel has been gaining 6,000 new subscribers daily and is generating him an estimated revenue of around $25,000 per day ($9 million a year), from ads alone.
And this isn’t the only channel Blippi has. His second channel Blippi Toys has over 7 million subscribers as of 2021 and has accumulated over 7 billion views. This channel is estimated to generate an average of 4 million views daily, which translates to an additional daily earning of $20,000 ($7.3 million per year).
On average, Blippi’s daily views count on his videos clock in at 5.6 million views. The ads that appear in-between videos help him make a daily income of $22,400 and an annual revenue of $8.2 million.
One of his videos, “Blippi Learns About Jungle Animals,” has over 813 million views on YouTube; he earned around $6.2 million from this one video. Another video, “Videos for Toddlers with Blippi | Learn Colors and Numbers,” has over 310 million views and earned him around $2.4 million. He has other channels, too, such as Blippi Arabic, Blippi Toys, Blippi Espanol, and many more. The Spanish version of Blippi’s is able to get over 5 million views daily and generate around $10,000 per day.
Stevin also offers his videos on Hulu and Amazon. His videos have remained in the Top 100 on Amazon’s list, and cost $1.99 per episode or $59.99 for the full season. On Hulu, it costs $5.99 per month to subscribe to Blippi’s channel. He’s also in talks with Netflix for a regular Blippi show in the near future – and there’s no doubt that a deal like that would boost his net worth by millions.
Besides this, Blippi also does live tours and sells merchandise around his character. In the summer of 2021, Blippi launched a North American tour of “Blippi The Musical,” with its first stop being Charleston, USA. This has, no doubt, helped drive up Blippi’s net worth even more. As for his merchandise, his line includes Blippi berets, shoes, toys, and pillows. Blippi action figures and mini versions of his signature bow tie and hats are also available for purchase.
And according to the Wall Street Journal, Blippi is on track to be the largest new preschool launch of the year. Blippi items are priced from $3.99 to $19.99 and are offered through both Walmart and Amazon.
Today, top YouTube stars like Blippi have all the resources and are highly equipped to move beyond the world of social media and introduce personalized learning for their target audience. And we can see this already happening with Moonbug Entertainment Ltd. and Amazon Kids+ collaborating with Blippi to create entertaining content with a long-form episodic series called “Blippi’s Treehouse,” which will particularly target educating kids. By venturing into education, Blippi is adding an additional revenue stream to his portfolio that will significantly increase his already-impressive net worth in the months to come.
